Revolut transfer route to Russia with recipient-bank and compliance checks

Can Revolut Send Money to Russia in 2026? What to Know

No. Revolut does not currently support transfers to or from Russia, and RUB is not supported for international transfers. A Revolut balance therefore cannot be sent directly to a Russian bank account or card. If you need to pay someone in Russia, use a compliant specialist route after checking the recipient, bank, purpose and likely return risk.

Need a route check before you send?

NoWALL can review the sending country, currency, recipient bank and payment purpose, then explain the available route and required details. Availability depends on compliance checks and the specific transaction.

Ask NoWALL about your transfer

This guide explains what the Revolut restriction means in practice, what not to try, and how to prepare a Russia-bound payment without treating any provider as a guaranteed workaround.

Does Revolut work for transfers to Russia in 2026?

Revolut’s current Help Centre gives a direct answer: it does not support transfers to or from Russia and Belarus. Its list of unsupported outbound destinations includes the Russian Federation, and RUB appears among unsupported international transfer currencies.

That means the following routes are not available as ordinary Revolut transfers:

  • a bank transfer from Revolut to a Russian account;
  • a RUB transfer from a Revolut balance;
  • a transfer received into Revolut from a Russian bank; or
  • using a Russian-issued card as if it were a normal supported funding source.

The restriction is a provider rule, not a statement that every personal payment to Russia is illegal. The legal and operational position depends on the sender’s jurisdiction, the parties, the recipient bank, the purpose of payment and the route used.

What happens if you try to add a Russian beneficiary?

You may be unable to create the beneficiary, the destination may appear unsupported, or the transfer may be rejected before it leaves Revolut. A payment that enters a route containing an unsupported or restricted bank can also be returned by an intermediary.

Do not disguise the destination, use a false payment purpose or route money through another person merely to defeat a restriction. That can create sanctions, fraud and account-review risk. It also makes it harder to explain the source and purpose of funds if a bank asks for evidence.

Revolut alternatives for sending money to Russia

There is no universal substitute. The useful question is not “Which app always works?” but “Which compliant route is available for this sender, recipient and purpose today?”

Route When it may fit What to check first Main risk
Specialist assisted transfer Personal support, a one-off payment or a documented business payment Sending country, recipient bank, purpose, fees and payout method Availability can change after screening
Direct bank transfer Only when both banks and every intermediary support the corridor Sanctions status, SWIFT/BIC, correspondent path and accepted currency Delay or return by an intermediary bank
Card or account payout in Russia When a service supports the recipient’s specific bank and payout type Whether payout is to a card number or bank account; recipient name match Assuming every MIR card or Russian card is reachable
Business payment route Invoices, contractors or suppliers with complete documents Contract, invoice, goods or services, parties and payment purpose Using a personal-transfer route for a commercial obligation

For a broader comparison, read how to send money to Russia in 2026. If the recipient has only shared a card number, first compare a Russian bank account versus card payout.

What details should you collect before choosing a route?

Ask the recipient for exact information rather than a screenshot with missing fields. A small mismatch can lead to a manual review or return.

Recipient details

  • full legal name in the form used by the receiving bank;
  • date of birth or address if the provider requires it;
  • bank name and branch details;
  • account number and BIC/SWIFT details for an account transfer;
  • card network and issuing bank for a card payout;
  • recipient phone number when required for payout notifications; and
  • confirmation that the account is active and can receive the planned currency or ruble payout.

Payment documents

  • sender identity document and proof of address;
  • evidence of the source of funds, such as a payslip or bank statement;
  • a clear, truthful payment purpose;
  • for family support, an explanation of the relationship if requested;
  • for business payments, the contract, invoice and description of goods or services; and
  • any supporting correspondence that explains the amount and beneficiary.

How compliance checks affect a Russia-bound payment

Payment providers and banks screen more than the country name. They may check the sender and recipient, their banks, beneficial owners, transaction purpose, goods or services, source of funds and any intermediary institutions.

For US-linked payments, OFAC says personal, non-commercial remittances are generally not the target of US sanctions. It also makes clear that a transaction still must not involve blocked persons or otherwise prohibited activity. That is why “personal transfer” is not a blanket approval.

EU restrictions also require transaction-specific checks. The European Commission publishes consolidated Russia sanctions guidance and a dedicated payment-services FAQ. Its guidance addresses both direct and indirect provision of restricted services and warns against arrangements designed to circumvent prohibitions.

Before sending, use a current official list and verify the recipient institution. The practical steps in checking a Russian recipient bank can help you collect the right identifiers, but a bank name alone is not a complete legal assessment.

Personal support and business payments are not the same

A payment to help a relative with living costs has a different purpose and evidence trail from an invoice for software, consulting, equipment or merchandise. Do not label a commercial payment as a gift or family support. Banks can compare the stated purpose with the recipient, amount, transaction history and attached documents.

If you are paying a company, start with the invoice payment guide. For an individual providing services, use the checklist for paying Russian freelancers and contractors. Commercial transactions may require additional review of ownership, sector restrictions and the underlying goods or services.

Fees, exchange rates and delivery timing

Compare the amount the recipient will actually receive, not just the advertised transfer fee. A quote can include a service fee, funding fee, exchange-rate margin, intermediary deduction and recipient-bank charge.

Ask whether the quote fixes the exchange rate and recipient amount, and how long that quote remains valid. If a transfer is returned, the sender can receive less than the original amount because of intermediary charges or exchange-rate movement. Our guide to fees and FX costs explains how to compare quotes on the same basis.

Delivery estimates should also be treated as estimates. Screening questions, banking cut-off times, weekends and incomplete recipient details can extend the timeline. If a payment stalls, follow the steps in why transfers to Russia are delayed or returned.

A practical route-check sequence

  1. Define the payment honestly. Record whether it is family support, a gift, salary, contractor work or an invoice.
  2. Identify the parties. Collect exact names, residence, ownership information where relevant and the recipient bank.
  3. Check the provider’s current rules. Revolut’s published position rules out a direct Russia transfer.
  4. Screen the bank and transaction. Check current sanctions and any sector or goods restrictions that apply to your jurisdiction.
  5. Compare a complete quote. Confirm fees, exchange rate, payout currency, recipient amount and return terms.
  6. Keep records. Save the quote, payment instructions, receipts and supporting documents.

A successful past payment does not prove that the same route remains available. Provider policies, bank relationships and sanctions lists can change without much notice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send money from Revolut to a Russian bank account?

No. Revolut’s current Help Centre says it does not support transfers to or from Russia. Russia is also listed as an unsupported outbound destination.

Can Revolut send Russian rubles?

RUB is listed as an unsupported currency for international transfers. A currency conversion inside an app would not make a Russian destination supported.

Can I send from Revolut to a MIR card?

Not as a direct Revolut transfer to Russia. A MIR card is only the recipient’s card network; route availability still depends on the issuing bank and the payout provider. Read the guide to sending money to a MIR card from abroad.

Are personal transfers to Russia legal?

They are not universally prohibited, but legality depends on the jurisdiction, parties, banks, purpose and route. US and EU rules differ, and neither permits dealings that breach applicable sanctions. Obtain professional advice for a high-value or complex transaction.

What is the safest alternative to Revolut for Russia?

There is no universally safest provider. Use a route that openly supports the corridor, screens the transaction, explains fees and payout terms, and does not ask you to hide the destination or purpose.
